Co-founder & Executive Director of Adhyayan, Kavita Anand is catalysing a committed learning community of educators across India, to transform the learning of students. For more than three decades as an educator, researcher, funder, school and system leader, and now edupreneur, she has worked towards ensuring ‘a good school for every child’. Kavita began her career teaching Psychology in Mumbai’s Elphinstone College. Her curiosity about her students’ motivations for their life choices, became the reason for researching school-based education. She helped spread the educational innovation of the Aga Khan Education Service, India and then worked to expand the education portfolio of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust. The experience was a launchpad for her own play school, Kidz@Play, and for setting up the now renowned K10 School, Shishuvan for a private management in Mumbai. In addition, she has been involved in school set up, curriculum development, professional development, leadership and governance of schools and school networks before starting Adhyayan. In the last six years Adhyayan Quality Education Services Pvt. Ltd. (AQES) (www.adhyayan.asia) has enabled 400+ schools across the country, to adopt stakeholder inclusive self-review for evidence-based improvement, benefitting 4.4 lakh students in 11 languages. Over 350 existing school leaders and leading teachers are associated with Adhyayan as a professional learning community of school assessors. To expand exponentially on the scale of impact, Kavita co-founded the Adhyayan Foundation in 2015 (www.adhyayanfoundation.org). The Foundation was commissioned by The Delhi Commission for Child Protection to collaborate on the creation of a School Development Index for 5800 Delhi government and private schools. The Foundation is currently partnering with the Goa Government to design and deliver the Systemic School Improvement Programme for its 826 schools for which it is supported by the Tata Trusts. Over the last decade, along with her partner and co-founder, Spokey Wheeler, Kavita has provided support for The Open University’s (OU) programme ‘Teacher Education through School-Based Support’, (TESS-India), which developed Open Education Resources for government schools and helped develop leadership resources for the OU’s award-winning ‘English in action’ (EIA) programme in Bangladesh and co-delivered a leadership programme for IGATE, the World Vision and Open University’s Foundational Literacy and Numeracy programme for 266 schools of Zimbabwe. Kavita was an integral part of the international delivery team for the School Leadership Development Programme (SLDP) curriculum with the National College of Teaching and Leadership,(NCTL) Nottingham and the National University for Education, Planning and Administration (NUEPA), which trained over 7000 government school leaders across 5 States of India. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), UK, Kavita was awarded an Ashoka Fellowship in 2015 for her single-minded determination to improve the quality of education in India. Kavita serves as a member of the Academic Council of Somaiya Vidyavihar, which comprises 34 institutes, and is on the Development Committee of the Kapila Khandvala College of Education. She is an IOE-LCLL (UK) Associate. She has recently set up INDIA ASCD, an affiliate of ASCD, USA, with a view to enabling schools and colleges to gain access to their vast research, publications and webinars. She has presented papers on Adhyayan’s work at national and international conferences and is an acknowledged public speaker.
